Fido passed away last week. He was happy and we expected to have Fido with us for, at least, several more years, but Fido got a paralysis-related infection in one of his back legs that was just too strong.
It is very difficult to express the sense of loss that we feel. Fido has been a part of the Donoghue family since a week before our wedding. We established our life together and learned to be a family with him. We shared each of our married holidays with him. Fido was there when we found out Laura was pregnant with Charlie and when we brought Charlie home from the hospital. And Fido’s accident was the first major adversity we faced as a family.
In short, Fido is an integral part of our family’s foundation. And after his accident, that became even more the case. We have both spent countless hours caring for him and taking him to vet visits, in addition to the normal time spent with a pet. Helping Fido go to the bathroom and taking him in and out of his cart each morning and evening brought us, and especially me, closer to Fido than we could have imagined. We miss him terribly, but we are also glad that he passed without a long decline or any discomfort.
Thank you for three and a half special years Fido. You taught us about perseverance and overcoming adversity. You adapted to paralysis and your cart amazingly. But most of all, you taught us about unconditional love and devotion. I will always miss your intent stare and the sound of your wheels right at my heels wherever I went. We pray that you are in Heaven with Tilly, chasing squirrels and eating everything in sight until you lose the trim, healthy figure the accident forced upon you and get back your preferred well-fed, roundness.

Rest in peace, good dog. Now, there is a furry black menace to all the bagels in heaven.
We'll always cherish the week we spent with you while Laura and Dave were on their honeymoon.
Thanks Matt. We really appreciate the kind thoughts & the smile you brought us. Fido loved carbs.
I'll never forget that fun weekend visiting Fido in Chicago (well, maybe Laura and Dave, too), sharing snuggles with the best little four-legged dude around. My world was a better place for having had Fido in it, all too briefly. May he watch over us in that realm where squeaky toys never lose their squeak.
